Reverse osmosis (RO) is one of the more intensive household drinking-water filtration approaches. That does not mean every UK home needs it.

The right question is whether the additional filtration capability is useful enough for your situation to justify installation, maintenance and wastewater.

What RO does

An RO system pushes water through a membrane designed to reject a broad range of dissolved substances. Systems commonly combine the membrane with pre-filters and sometimes post-filtration stages.

That makes RO fundamentally different from a simple carbon filter jug.

Why people choose RO

Common reasons include wanting broad reduction of dissolved contaminants or having a specific water-quality concern that a simpler filter does not address.

But broad filtration is not automatically a reason to buy the most complicated system available.

The trade-offs

Before choosing RO, consider:

  • installation space beneath the sink;
  • filter and membrane replacement;
  • wastewater produced during filtration;
  • flow rate and storage arrangement, depending on system design;
  • purchase and ongoing maintenance cost.
