Are Under-Sink Water Filters Worth It in the UK?
A practical UK guide to under-sink water filters: when they make sense, what they do not solve, installation trade-offs, cartridge costs and alternatives.

What’s going on
UK tap water is generally safe, but people buy filters for taste, limescale, or specific concerns. Different filter types do different jobs.
Why it matters
The biggest win is often behavioural: water that tastes good is water you drink. For kettles and appliances, reducing limescale can also make daily life easier.
Common causes
- Hard water areas = limescale build-up.
- Taste/odour variability from local supply or plumbing.
- Confusion about what filters can/can’t remove.
No-spend first steps
- If taste is the issue: chill water, use a covered jug, or try a different bottle/cup.
- Descale kettles regularly if you’re in a hard-water area.
- Check your local supplier’s water quality report for context.
If you’re buying anything, use this calm checklist
- Choose by use case: jug (taste), under-sink (capacity), countertop (mid).
- Budget for ongoing filters (replacement cost matters most).
- Avoid fear-based marketing; prioritise clear specs and replacements.
General information only. If you have symptoms or a medical condition, consult a qualified clinician.
Under-sink water filters appeal to people who want filtered drinking water without keeping a jug on the counter. But whether one is worth it depends on the problem you are actually trying to solve.
When an under-sink filter can make sense
It may be a good fit if you:
- want filtered water available directly from a dedicated or existing tap;
- use enough drinking water that constantly refilling a jug is annoying;
- are comfortable with installation and ongoing cartridge changes;
- have checked that the system targets the substances you actually care about.
What it will not necessarily solve
An under-sink drinking-water filter is not the same as a whole-home water softener. If your main frustration is limescale on taps, shower screens, kettles and appliances, read Shower Filter vs Water Softener UK and our hard-water guide first.
Likewise, not every under-sink system removes the same substances. Check the manufacturer's current reduction claims and independent certification where available rather than assuming 'filtered' means everything has been removed.
Installation is part of the decision
Some systems connect inline to the cold-water feed, while others use a dedicated drinking-water tap. Reverse-osmosis systems can require more space and plumbing than simpler cartridge filters.
Before buying, check:
- cupboard space;
- connection requirements;
- whether a separate tap is needed;
- water pressure requirements;
- whether professional installation is recommended.
Replacement filters matter more than the headline price
The purchase price is only the start. Compare the cartridge replacement interval, replacement cost and availability.
A cheaper system with expensive proprietary cartridges may cost more to own over several years than a more expensive unit with predictable replacement costs.

Under-sink filter vs filter jug
A jug is cheaper and simpler to start with, but needs refilling and takes up fridge or counter space. An under-sink system costs more and requires installation, but can be more convenient for households using larger quantities of filtered drinking water.

What about reverse osmosis?
RO is a more intensive filtration approach and is not automatically the right answer for every household. Consider wastewater, installation, maintenance and whether the extra filtration is justified for your goal.
Our Waterdrop G3P600 RO guide covers that decision in more detail.
Quick decision rule
Want simple, low-cost filtration: start with a jug or countertop system.
Want convenient everyday filtered drinking water: an under-sink system may be worth comparing.
Main problem is whole-home limescale: investigate softening instead.
Need high-intensity filtration: compare RO carefully rather than assuming it is automatically better.
When you are ready to compare current options, use the maintained Water Filtration shortlist.
