Storage comes before filtration

If the mains supply stops completely, a filter attached to your tap cannot create water that is not there.

So the first layer of resilience is boring but effective: keep some potable water stored at home.

Good habits include:

  • Keep drinking water in food-safe containers intended for water storage.
  • Store it somewhere cool, dark and away from chemicals, fuels or strong odours.

A sensible 72-hour household setup

You do not need an expensive survival kit. A useful basic setup is:

  1. Enough stored drinking water for three days.
  2. A clean refillable bottle for each household member.
  3. A normal household filter if you already prefer filtered tap water.
  4. A portable filtration option if you travel, hike or want an additional backup layer.
  5. A kettle or safe alternative way to boil water if mains electricity is unavailable and official advice requires boiling.
  6. A written note of your water supplier's emergency contact details, so you are not completely dependent on a working phone or internet connection.

If the tap stops unexpectedly

First, work out whether the problem is inside your property or affecting the local supply.

  • Check another cold tap.
  • Check whether neighbours are affected.
  • Look for an outage notice from your water company if communications are working.
  • Protect the water you already have: avoid unnecessary flushing, washing and cleaning until you understand the situation.
  • Use stored drinking water for drinking and food preparation first.

If the interruption is prolonged, your supplier or local authority may arrange alternative supplies. Follow official advice rather than improvising with questionable water sources unnecessarily.
